How playing cards can help build a positive performance culture

Building a positive performance culture takes effort and understanding.  Our custom-made cards help the leaders we work with to explore and track the steps required in all circumstances.

One of our most valuable and successful leadership programs is a two-day Building a Positive Performance Culture workshop.  Yes, this might be surprising, but people do want to spend two days in face-to-face training and participants have often told us that it is the best training they have ever attended (which as you can imagine makes us feel good).

My opening line for this workshop is usually, most people do a good job and we need to focus on them and support them.  About 20% of people can’t or don’t do a good job.  These people take up a disproportionate amount of time and effort.  Many of these people will be able to do a good job with the right support and development.

This leaves the 20% of the 20% and these people can be very challenging and are often difficult, damaging or dangerous.  We also need to learn to deal well with them.

We want leaders to be able to focus their efforts on the 80% of people who are doing a good job.  They deserve our support and attention.

We also want leaders to be able to support people to achieve good performance.

And, when all of the right actions are taken to support good performance and that doesn’t work, we want leaders to be able to act in supportive, fair and ethical ways when and if they need to take more formal actions.  These challenges keep people awake at night.

All of this is a lot to take in, so I designed a pack of cards that assists.  It provides a clear, visual and compact resource for leaders as a reminder as they carefully work through all the steps of supporting their teams and organisations and if and when needed, to know how to respond to more difficult or challenging performance or behaviours.

We see that playing these cards helps leaders understand and embed the knowledge of the steps to take as they navigate the road to building a positive performance culture.
