5 Tips for Taking Control of Your Own Professional Development

  1. Take charge – this is your professional development and you will benefit from it in the long term, you will work more efficiently and understand how what you do contributes to the big picture
  2. Build resilience – we all have days when we don’t want to go to work; but keep in mind that you are paid to do a job and should not sweat the small stuff. You need to focus on doing your job productively and keeping perspective is important.
  3. Bring your tools and practice together – Have you got everything you need to do your job effectively? What are you missing?  Have you been taught the procedures or do you have access to them?
  4. Rethink your approach to professional development – Take on small learning exercises in bite size chunks of 20 minutes or so. If you have a long learning program to undertake, can you schedule it into your Calendar to ensure that you undertake it?
  5. Do your own training needs analysis – What areas do you need assistance with? Write a list of things that you need to learn more about and work out where to find the answers.  You may need to talk to your manager or co-workers to find more information.  Link this to both your current job as well as your next career step.
